Research Practice Policy

Vorsprung is continually researching all exercises and programmes used and recommended by Vorsprung's Coaching Academy.

Currently,
Vorsprung's Research Department is engaged in a longitudinal study of the impact of leisure and recreational exercise and sports on the NHS.
It's aims are:

1. Does guided club training or individual exercise programmes have more of an impact on NHS resources.

2. Could the injuries, seen by NHS departments, related to sports activities be preventable at source (club situation) with better education, performance and delivery of exercises.

3. Which sports fair the worst.

4. Which departmental NHS clinics take the greatest burden.

5. UK breakdown comparisons (England, Scotland, Wales & N.I.) / Continental comparisons with (Germany, France, Denmark).

1. The types of evidence we are interested in have broadened. E.g. It is no longer ok to over-rely on a particular source of evidence. Lived human experience is considered more important than it used to be. Although random control trials are useful in many instances, they are also limited in the typed of things they can test, sometimes creating false dichotomies.

2. The way we interpret the data has changed. E.g. in the past we might have said ‘oh that’s just a placebo effect’ but the effect of placebo can be quite large, so we might investigate using it to good effect (instead of writing it off because we can’t explain it).

3. Our understanding of what it means when someone asks for more evidence has changed. When someone asks for more evidence they might be asking out of genuine interest and/or for emotional reassurance. Sometimes people (particularly with more power) demand extra proof to avoid their own difficult emotions or to delay making decisions. Previously we would have accepted such a request. Now we would want to help with the underlying emotional problem as well as generate useful (probably new) data on the topic.
